GENDER BUDGET ANALYSIS

A gender budget initiative does not aim to produce separate budgets for women and men, or to increase the amount of money spent on sex-specific programmes.

Instead it aims to analyse any form of public expenditure, or method of raising public money, from a gender perspective, identifying the implications and impacts for women and girls and men and boys.

Women are frequently disadvantaged by policies that do not recognise their different realities and experiences, including unequal pay, roles at work and home, and gender-based violence.

REFLECTING GENDER DIFFERENCES

When we talk about public policy or programmes, we mean the public services that impact on everyone's lives such as health, housing, education and transport.

For public policy to meet the needs of women and men, they must take acount of these differences and recognise how gender influences public political decisions, as well as individual choices. That's what gender budget analysis aims to do.
