Is investing in childcare worth it?

June 19, 2024, 12.00 – 13.30
Is investing in childcare worth it from an economic and a gender equality perspective? What is the role of gender budgeting in linking economic and gender equality outcomes? What can we learn from investing in childcare elsewhere? And what are the advantages of this investment for children?
Join us for the third webinar in our series on childcare as we discuss the links between gender equality, investment in childcare, and how gender budgeting approaches contribute positively to a resilient economy. Presented and moderated by our Coordinator, Carmen Martinez, the event will also touch on why investment in early years is crucial, particularly for disadvantaged children, but also, for society.
Our excellent panel will offer different perspectives on the subject:
- Scherie Nicol, Policy Analyst at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), will discuss the macroeconomic and fiscal benefits of gender equality, the type of gender budgeting tools that can be applied to achieve greater equality, and why childcare policies are central to this.
- Peter Huber, Senior Researcher at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research, will offer key insights in relation to the difference that investing in childcare can make based on Vienna’s experience.
- Jonathan Broadberry, Director of Policy & Communications for National Day Nurseries Association, will focus on why investment in early years leads to better outcomes for children and society.

Scottish and Local Government officials, elected members, party researchers, and any other policymakers with an interest in childcare and creating an economy that works for families.
We would also love our members, parents, and particularly mothers, to attend this event. We have arranged it during lunch to try to cater to caring responsibilities. Please don’t worry if you can only attend a section of the event, we would still like to see you there!
