What's wrong with childcare in Scotland? - Perspectives ahead of the Scottish Budget 24/25 and ways forward - 13 December 2023

The recording of our online event that was the first in a series of online events focusing on the need to invest in childcare. During this event, we presented parents’, and specifically mother’s, experiences of childcare in Scotland. As well as this, we looked at the current issues in the system and opened up the conversation to alternative ways to deliver childcare ahead of the Scottish Budget 24/25.

The speakers included:

- Carmen Martinez, Coordinator at the Scottish Women's Budget Group. 

- Carole Erskine, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Pregnant then Screwed Scotland.

- Jonathan Broadbery, Director of Policy and Communications at National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA)

The UK Autumn Budget - Potential opportunities & implications for Scotland - 29 November 2023

The recording of our online event where we looked at the implications of the UK Government’s Autumn Budget Statement, drawing attention to the opportunities and implications presented to Scotland, and what we think the Scottish Budget should focus on from a gender equality perspective.

The speakers included: 

 - Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson, Director at the UK Women’s Budget Group.

 - João Sousa, Deputy Director and Senior Knowledge Exchange Fellow at the Fraser of Allander Institute.

Women and the Cost-of-Living Crisis across the 4 Nations - Session 1 - 1 February 2023

Session 1 of our 4 Nations Annual Conference was 'Researching the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on women in Wales,

Scotland, Northern Ireland and the UK.

Women and the Cost-of-Living Crisis across the 4 Nations - Session 3 - 1 February 2023

Session 3 of our 4 Nations Annual Conference was 'Panel Discussion and Q&A: Responding to the crisis - experiences and lessons we can learn'.

The speakers included:

- Rebecca Evans, MS, Minister for Finance and Local Government

- Natalie Don, MSP, Convener of the Social Justice and Social Security Committee of the Scottish Parliament

- Baroness Ruth Lister of Burtersett CBE, Member of the House of Lords

Tackling women's poverty as the costs keep rising - 4 October 2022

As part of Challenge Poverty Week 2022, we hosted 'Tackling women's poverty as the cost keeps rising'. We discussed what the cost-of-living crisis meant for women in Scotland, heard about early findings from our joint qualitative research with The Poverty Alliance (https://www.swbg.org.uk/content/publi..., and listened to experiences of particular groups of women as costs keep rising.

A Feminist Green New Deal for Scotland - 8 October 2021

This online panel discussion was held in the lead up to COP 26, this event introduced feminist perspectives on just transitions. With presentations and discussion including:

  • What a feminist Green New Deal in Scotland needs to include;
  • What Scotland's global role in a just transition can be; and
  • What gender equality activists should be demanding from Government

Gender Budgeting for Recovery - 1 September 2021

At this Scottish Women's Budget Group webinar we heard experiences from Finland and Canada and reflected on what we can learn for implementation of gender budgeting in Scotland.

Anna Elomäki, shared experience from Finland where gender budgeting has been implemented for the last 10years, and Katherine Scott, Senior Economist and Director of Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Making Women Count initiative, shared experience of the evolution and impact of gender budgeting in Canada.
