Flexible childcare, an ideal or a necessity?

Flexible childcare, an ideal or a necessity?

March 5, 2024, 12.00 – 14.00

Online

Why did the Scottish Women’s Budget Group’s Childcare Survey 2023 find that 16% of those eligible for the funded Early Learning and Childcare were unable to access this? Do we need more flexible childcare services in Scotland? Who is penalised by the lack of flexibility in provision, and what can be done about it?

Presented and moderated by our Coordinator, Carmen Martinez, the event will seek to explore issues of flexibility in our childcare system, alternative models and other solutions so childcare services can respond to the needs of women in a modern Scotland.

An excellent panel will offer different perspectives on the subject:

  • Aleksandra Webb, Lecturer in School of Business and Creative Industries at the University of the West of Scotland, will illustrate the policy issue through her research on the childcare challenges faced by mothers in Scotland's performing arts sector.
  • Susan McGhee, Chief Executive Officer at Flexible Childcare Services Scotland, will discuss her organisation’s approach to childcare and the impact that this service is having on communities across Scotland.
  • Lisa Gallagher, Co-Founder and Director at Flexibility Works, will delve into the role that flexible working policies can play in supporting families, the types of flexible working and the links between flexible work and flexible childcare.

Who can attend?

Policymakers with an interest in improving the current childcare system in Scotland.

We would also love our members, parents, and particularly mothers, to attend this event. We have arranged it during lunch to try to cater to caring responsibilities. Please don’t worry if you can only attend a section of the event, we would still like to see you there!
