Bella Caledonia Article: Ambitious (for women) in Scotland?

Last week’s Programme for Government rightly identified tackling the cost-of-living crisis, violence against women and girls (VAWG) and sustaining community cohesion as crucial to reducing division and creating social stability. 

As a feminist organisation, the Scottish Women’s Budget Group knows first-hand the extent of VAWG and its impact on women. For this reason, it was refreshing to see the Programme for Government lay it out so clearly. 

But while the actions outlined are welcomed, particularly the focus on VAWG, preventing violence in the first place requires a broader approach – one that includes sustained investment in care, public services and the communities that support people to thrive. This would alleviate some of the factors that make the cost-of-living such a pressing issue and contribute to the conditions for VAWG
